About Kelowna Yoga Classes
Kelowna Yoga Classes are offered in a variety of styles and cater to different levels of experience. Whether you're looking for a vigorous flow class or a gentle yin yoga class, you will find a variety of options available to suit your needs in Kelowna. Prices for yoga classes range from $20 to $25 per session.
Nearly every Kelowna yoga class falls into one of these broad categories:
Vinyasa Flow / Power Yoga
Power / Vinyasa flow classes are all about movement and strength. In flow yoga, the postures are performed as a sequence of movements, with each posture usually held for one to five breaths. Flow yoga puts your body to work, and you can expect to sweat - even if it’s not a hot yoga class. You’ll leave feeling charged up, or ready to take it easy for the rest of the day.
Yin Yoga
Yin classes are restful in nature, and are all about relaxing and opening up the body and mind. In Yin yoga, postures are held for as long as 3-5 minutes to relax the body’s muscles so much that you also stretch your body’s connective tissue - known as fascia. Expect to leave feeling way more limber, free of tension, and possibly a bit sleepy.
Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga is an even slower and more passive version of Yin yoga and is considered as one of the most gentle yoga practices possible. Restorative yoga uses props like pillows, bolsters, and blocks to gently open and align the body without exerting any effort.
Hatha Yoga
Hatha is a branch of yoga that focuses on the physical aspect of the practice. The word "hatha" can be translated to "force" or "willful," referring to the use of physical postures, or asanas, and breathing techniques, or pranayama, to align and balance the body, mind, and breath. Hatha is considered the foundation of all yoga styles, making it a perfect starting point for beginners. Hatha yoga classes often include a combination of standing and seated postures, movement and stillness, along with breathing exercises and relaxation or meditation techniques.
Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra, also known as "yogic sleep," is a type of guided meditation that is typically practiced lying down. It is a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping, in which the body is completely relaxed and the mind is alert. Guided meditations typically include a body scan, visualization exercise, and breathing techniques. Yoga Nidra is said to have many benefits including reducing your stress, improving sleep, and increasing your overall sense of well-being.
Prenatal Yoga (Yoga class for pregnancy)
Prenatal yoga is specifically designed for pregnant women. Prenatal yoga class typically includes physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques to help women (each with different bodies) prepare for childbirth and cope with the physical and emotional changes of pregnancy. Benefits of prenatal yoga include reducing stress, improving sleep, and helping to alleviate pregnancy-related aches and pains.
So… What is "Yoga?"
The definition of the word Yoga is “balance” or “unity”. As a practice, Yoga is the art of calming the mind so that it’s capable of experiencing complete awareness - an awareness that’s free of judgement, worry, or excessive emotion.
The practice of Yoga as we know it in western society is focused on self-improvement and self-actualization through meditation (dhyana), breathwork (pranayama), and physical postures (asanas).
By consistently practicing yoga, practitioners claim to enjoy the following benefits:
Strength and ease of mind and body
Increased calm and focus
Decreased anxiety
A release of muscle tension
Improved immune system function
Increased breath capacity, so you can completely exhale and inhale
More capability of meeting life’s challenges
The ability to perceive the world free of ‘misapprehensions’
An overall sense of well-being
Newfound wisdom
In rare instances, awakening of the kundalini
Who was Patanjali?
Patanjali was an ancient Indian sage who many considered to be the father of yoga (some say Lord Shiva invented yoga, but that is a topic for another day).
Patanjali's Yoga Sutras is a collection of 196 written aphorisms that serve as an esoteric 'guide' to the practice of yoga.
According to Patanjali, the ultimate goal of yoga is to achieve "samadhi," a state of spiritual enlightenment or union with the divine.
He defines yoga as the "control of the fluctuations of the mind" and lays out an eight-limbed path - known as the "Ashtanga Yoga" - to achieve this goal.
The eight limbs are:
- yama (moral codes)
- niyama (self-discipline and spiritual observances)
- asana (posture)
- pranayama (breathing control)
- pratyahara (sense withdrawal)
- dharana (concentration)
- dhyana (meditation)
- samadhi (enlightenment)
